Tomball ISD Spelling Bee Goes 22 Rounds!

Spelling bees are an American tradition that dates back almost ninety years. The first official spelling bee winner in 1925 was eleven year old Frank Neuhauser. He and the nine other finalists were invited to meet the President Calvin Coolidge at the White House.

Tomball ISD’s district spelling bee was composed of twelve students who won their school’s spelling bee. After twenty-two rounds, seventh grader Jennifer Ho from Willow Wood Junior High School won by correctly spelling the word "dressage", which is "the highest expression of horse training" according to the International Equestrian Federation.

Jennifer Ho will now advance to the Houston PBS Spelling Bee this March. The Houston PBS Spelling Bee is the nation’s third largest spelling bee with over 100,000 spellers. The winners will advance to the national spelling bee in June.

Tomball City Council Approves a New City Mascot

The city of Tomball will soon have a mascot of their own. Mike Baxter, the city marketing director made the original request for a costume for a city mascot.

According to Baxter, cities of varying sizes have found marketing and tourism success after creating a mascot. Baxter also said that Choo-Choo Charlie is just a working name at the moment and that the mascot’s official name has not yet been decided.“We can use a mascot on anything from festivals, public relations, photo shoots, advertising, schools and summits,” Baxter said.

“It can also be used as an educational tool,” Baxter mentioned. The mascot can be used in schools to teach local children about the railroad history in Tomball and how Tomball changed its name from Peck, once the railroad arrived.

The result of a pre-kindergarten education is almost always evident in a child’s educational career. Tomball ISD’s program goes above and beyond the standard. According to Tomball ISD, the program builds self esteem, a lifelong love of learning, and fun-filled activities that allow the children to succeed. Skills that the program refines include social, emotional, physical, mental, and language development through hands on activities.

Back to School: Get Organized in 2012

The holidays are over and the kids have gone back to school. Stephanie O’Dea, a New York Times best-selling author has tips to get organized by going to PROM and it’s not the school dance.

Purge, Remove, Organize, and Maintain. Purge. Throw out everything that is not in use, not needed, and unidentifiable. She also cautions against saving things for “some day”. Remove. Get rid of everything chosen an a purged item. Take the trash out immediately. Organize. Set aside a few hours to organize the remaining items. Use storage baskets, bins, shelves, pegs, anything that will maintain order. Maintain. At the end of every day spend 15 minutes restoring order, put things pack where they belong. Kids and spouses too.

Everyone deserves a calm, organized, peaceful home! For more information visit a model home in Wildwood at Northpointe.
